After the rainy season, local temperatures shot up to 36℃, ushering in the hottest season of the year. Thick white clouds hover above crowds, and it becomes hard to breathe under the scorching sun.
Take a moment to dip in the pool…
Compared with indoor swimming pools, open-air swimming pools give a nostalgic and vivid Summer feeling. But finding open-air swimming pools is a not a task for the faint-hearted.
1980s Japanese Style Retro Swimming Pool
The swimming pool is in the Moon Lake scenic area, which is 10 minutes walking distance from Hanyang Railway Station subway station. In 2009, the Wuhan government changed three lotus wetlands near the Moon Lake into a swimming pool. The headwaters were brought in and filtered from Han River. It is said that the water quality is as clean as the one flowing from your home’s faucets.
5 RMB fare/person is a great deal too!
Many years ago, the older Hanyang generation spent its Summer days in the Moon Lake pool. In ‘90s, the water was so clear that you could hold some up to drink. But as time went on, the lake water became too polluted to swim in. Veterans made a determined effort to swim in the Han River. After the establishment of the open-air swimming pool in the Moon Lake, old Hanyang residents joyfully returned!
In 2010, the swimming pool was rebuilt and retained the original plank trestle, with fixed blue ceramic tiles. The Summer white cloud inverted reflections in clear blue water. Linked up into a single stretch with distant Moon Lake as well as a lotus pond. Some artistic youth say this is “the most Japanese style summer in Wuhan”.
Dabble and enjoy in the Kikujiro Summer
At the moment, ticket prices are 20 RMB/person. Along the entrance street is a simple booth selling swimsuits and swimming rings. After entering the gate, the Hanyang old dormitory district shows up. With the sound of cicadas in the greenery, time suddenly… slows…down.
In the sun, boys with naked arms chase each other. Surrounding walls are covered with green vines, and cats stroll between residential buildings.
Along the swimming pool, as if enter a Kikujiro Summer. The golden light of sunset shimmers on the crystal blue pool water accompanied by the surrounding dark green pine trees.
Unlike general cheap swimming pool areas with square dance music, here you swim to the sounds of Pu Shu.
Cicadas chant together on the nearby mountain, and children’s laughter rings in the background taking people go back to the Summer vacation of their students days.
The water of the Han River has a soft touch. Due to the warm broil of the sun, the water in the open-air swimming pool will not act as a trigger for you.
Without the intense flavor of bleaching powder, the water appears a little light cyan color, and the wind blows with the smell of grass.
In the event of less people and beautiful view, you can’t hit others while going back and forth in one breath.
The kid’s area is shallow suitable for people in low water capacity & prefer to dabble. Splashed slides and small amusement facilities are equipped too. Don’t worry about getting a circular swimming aid or a swimming cap.
It’s all free…
Lying in the water, the world suddenly becomes silent. Bizarre shapes of clouds float, and time seems stand still.
Other than swimming, this is a fine place for shooting portrait photos.
In the late afternoon, the burning sun changes into the sunset, and diverges through trees to fall into the pool glittering, which becomes an extraordinarily gentle view.
The photographer takes a series of Japanese style portrait photos for Zhang Xiaohua.
The thick dark green pine forests split the sunset into a divine light. Without filter, there is a retro-film impression with a casual shot.
As the sky darkens, swimmers exit the pool, passing through a distance of street that’s concealed by a forest, with no signage in sight.
