Africa-China Business Group Ltd (ACBG) held a Job & Career Workshop this Saturday 11th February 2017 in Wuhan at the Hubei Provincial University Student’s club for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Complex. This event aimed at empowering students by providing training and bringing new opportunities in China. It was in a form of a workshop combining plenary and practical sessions where tools and insights were given to students to fill the gap between the academic world and the job market. A very impressive number of participants of about 70, turned up for this event from all over the world especially from Africa. Even students from Beijing attended the event.
The workshop was divided into three main sessions:
- Lenovo’s presentation on job application and interview process in China
- Workshop: How to write an attractive resume and the 12 golden keys for a successful job interview
- Networking and one-on-one meetings with recruiters of companies
Ms. Coral Tuo, a representative from the department of Lenovo Human Resource kick started the event with a very insightful and eye opening presentation on how the process of applying for a job in china is commonly conducted. She opened up about what to expect for those who are interested in joining the Chinese job market with its specificities. This impinging session coupled with a Q&A moment left the students captivated and hopeful to apply very soon at Lenovo and other companies. She very much encouraged those who believe have the potential to be interns or employees to not hesitate but apply as doors continue to open for international vocations in China.
The second session of the event was very much needed for the success of this workshop both to the ACBG team as well as the participants. It was very practical and effective. Participants got a 30 minutes lecture and presentation on the ‘tools and tips on how to write an attractive resume. The Director of Projects and Administration of ACBG and Project Management certified (PMP), Mr. Saviour Ayertey Nubuor embarked the audience on a journey of how to end up with an accurate and attractive curriculum vitae. He outlined the commonly made mistakes. Then later gave buzz words and positive action verbs that are to be used. With the aim of going from theory to practice, all participants were handed out sheets of papers and were requested to draft a brief resume of themselves applying the tools they had just learnt.
As if the program had not reached its peak, immediately followed another inspiring presentation from the CEO of ACBG, Mr. Thierry Belinga who brilliantly took us on what he referred to as the ’12 Golden Keys of A Successful Interview’. Based on his own experience during his interview with the CEO of Afriland Bank in China. He explained how this interview led him to a great professional position in the Bank and gave him high standard of value and self-discovering. He said that many doors and opportunities opened up just from a well put and charismatic interview. As he continued to share his experience some of his Golden Keys included ‘Humility’. He stressed that just being humble and desiring to serve not necessarily to be served will take many far. His zeal, passion and dynamism definitely captured the attention of the audience. He emphasized on the character and attitude of an interviewee, encouraging all the participants to believe in themselves.
Last on the presentation list just before the beginning of the third session was the Wuhan Social team who introduced their company to the audience and shared about their internship program. Their representatives Ms. Aissatou, Mr. David and Mr. Rugare gave out an overview of the interesting and useful features of their webapp.
Finally, there was a networking session with recruiters. Several companies had been invited so they branched into various booths were deep interactions and conversations took place. Companies included: Lenovo, Zion Media, Izandu Center (IZC), Global Polyglots Net (gpn), Future Group (FGC), HanNation and Wuhan Social. The students got to be informed about all these companies and got a one-to-one opportunity to talk to each one of their representatives. Most importantly these companies were recruiting interns and scouting potential employees with certain skills in different fields as the cherry on top of the workshop. Contacts were exchanged, after all it was a happy ending to all who came to share, learn and enjoy.
The event lasted for about four hours and everybody was awarded certificates of appreciation for the companies and certificates of training for participants respectively. Also from the resume drafting, students were given their feedback which was helpful because the same resumes were used during the recruitment session from companies. The ACBG intended to provide value to the student’s future career prospects and academics not only in China but anywhere their endeavors lead them to.
Look out for more conferences, workshops and international recruitments as the ACBG event and training department is already working on its upcoming event. Besides the organization of such events, ACBG is a strategic investment and business consulting platform aiming at providing cutting-edge business services to local and international companies, budding entrepreneurs and adventurous students from Africa, China and the world.
