During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, two underground tunnels along the Yangtze River and the Han River will be built in Hankou and Wuchang. Among them, the construction of the Hanzhengjie double-layered tunnel located under the Hankou core area will start within the year.

The Hanzhengjie Tunnel will be a major passage connecting the Hanzhengjie central service district with the urban expressways and the ring roads. Plans call for a total investment of RMB 7.65 billion. Covering a distance of 5.1 kilometers, it will be the first underground traffic facility constructed along the Yangtze River and the Han River. Upon completion, drivers will be able to access the urban expressway from the Hanzhengjie core area within five minutes and arrive at major traffic hubs within 15 minutes.

During the 13th Five-Year Plan period, Wuhan will also begin the construction of a dual-line Shuiguohu Tunnel in Wuchang.
