Wǔhàn Dàxué (colloquially 武大 or Wǔdà) is a university in Wuhan, the capital city of Hubei Province in Central China. It was founded in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong 张之洞, governor of Hubei and Hunan Provinces in the late Qing Dynasty. Wuhan University has full support in the construction and development from the central and local government of China. The current president is Professor Dou XianKang.

In the process of development and evolution, the institute changed its name several times before it was finally named Wuhan National University in 1928. It is one of the earliest comprehensive national universities in modern China. By the end of 1946, the university had established 6 colleges, the colleges of liberal art, law, sciences, engineering, agriculture and medicine. In 2000, an amalgamation of the former Wuhan University, Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping, and Hubei Medical University was announced, which ushered in a new era in its 100-odd years of development.
Since its birth, Wuhan University has cultivated more than 300 000 professional talents in various occupations, among whom there are over 100 members of the Chinese Academy of Science and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Wuhan University alumni have also made great contributions to the national construction and social advancement.
Over 3000 foreign students that represent at least 120 different countries from all over the world are currently enrolled as Wuhan University Students; creating a diverse and multi-cultural learning environment. All international students fall under the Wuhan University School of International Education, and are brought together by the Wuhan University International Students’ Union (WISU). WISU works towards bridging the gap between local and international students, as well as creating a home away from home for the many international students of Wuhan University.
A cultural festival is held annually by the international students, one in which traditions, food and outfits from students’ home countries are showcased.
Wuhan University is working towards becoming a world-class, comprehensive research university both domestically and on the international stage.
